Meta takes on ChatGPT and Gemini with new Llama 4 models: What it is, how to use and more

Meta has launched Llama 4 models including Maverick and Scout, which have advanced multimodal capabilities for tasks such as image understanding and document summarization. These models use new machine learning techniques for improved performance

Meta has released two new Llama 4 models (AFP)

Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta has launched its latest AI models in the Llama 4 series that will power its chatbot of the same name on WhatsApp, Instagram and other company services. The two new Llama 4 models: Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick are available to download from the Meta website and Hugging Face starting today.

Apart from these models, Meta also previewed another model called Llama 4 Behemoth, which it says is “one of the smartest Llamas in the world and the most powerful model ever built to serve as a teacher for our new models.”

Meta has trained its Llama 4 model to be natively multimodal by pre-training it on a huge amount of unlabeled text, image, and video data. In simple terms, this means that the models can seamlessly understand and respond to both images and text.

The new models take inspiration from Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which used a new machine learning technique called mixing of experts, which allows different parts of the model to be trained for specific tasks for better performance and efficiency.

However, none of the new models announced by Meta are reasoning models like the OpenAI O3-mini or DeepSeek R1. Reasoning models take a little longer to respond to answers and are intended to mimic human thinking to find better answers to more complex questions.

What you need to know about the new Llama 4 model:

Llama 4 Maverick includes 17 billion active parameters with 128 experts. Meta says Maverick is “a product workhorse model for general assistant and chat use cases” and is ideal for tasks related to accurate image understanding and creative writing.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 would ditch the Snapdragon chipset in favor of the Exynos 2500

Reportedly around 1,60,000 Galaxy Z Fold 7 units will be produced

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to launch in the second half of this year

Last year’s model ran on a Snapdragon chipset

  • Samsung has used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets in its foldable phones since the beginning. If the latest leak turns out to be true, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 could be the first phone to use the company’s in-house Exynos SoC.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in July. It is rumoured to come with a 3.6-inch cover display and a 6.8-inch inner display. It may feature 12GB of RAM and could be offered in 256GB or 512GB storage options. It is expected to feature a dual rear camera unit with a 50-megapixel primary sensor and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. It is likely to pack a 4,300mAh battery and offer 25W wired charging speeds.

Samsung is believed to launch its Galaxy Z Flip 7 at the Galaxy Unpacked event later this year. While details about the clamshell foldable phone have not been officially confirmed, new rumours about its specifications have surfaced on the web. According to a new report, Samsung may use its in-house Exynos 2500 chipset in its upcoming foldable phone. This will be a departure from the recent past, when Samsung used Qualcomm chipsets for its foldable phones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 May Run on Exynos 2500

According to a report by Korean publication Seoul Economic Daily, Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) division will start mass production of the new foldable phone in May at factories in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do (Korea) and Vietnam. The brand is reportedly planning to make around 2,40,000 units of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and around 1,70,000 units of the rumoured Galaxy Z Flip FE. Meanwhile, around 1,60,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will reportedly be made in four colours, including a new Coral Red colour option that matches the Galaxy S25 series.

The report states that Samsung’s MX division is conducting final tests on putting the Exynos 2500 chip on the Galaxy Z Flip 7. The brand is currently working on adopting its in-house chipset in the next-generation flip-style foldable phones regardless of the region.

The Exynos 2500 chipset, designed by Samsung’s System LSI division and manufactured on a 3nm process, was originally planned to be fitted in the Galaxy S25 series. However, it was cancelled due to performance issues and other unknown reasons, the report said.
